In yet another attempt to 'guilt trip' myself into doing some kind of exercise I bought myself a flash bike ....
This week I've been riding it to work and back. That may sound pretty impressive but it takes me all of 8 minutes and there are hardly any hills to speak of til the end of the day when I walk up our mini mountain.
Tonight I made up my mind to push it to a 15 minute cycle to house church - my first night ride. I left plenty of time and sailed down the slope gleefully... until I faced a car coming around the corner and realised I hadn't put my new lights on. I pulled up out of the way and felt around for a light switch of some kind but it was so cold I gave up pretty quickly and, horrified at the thought of going back for the car, took the back way instead. The way I'd never actually got right driving in the car before... perhaps, the way I never should have gone!
Fourty-five minutes later after; being forced to leave the quiet well lit streets of the next suburb; dodging the occasional car on otherwise dark empty roads; and doing numerous loops around the back blocks of Mount Gambier, I finally recognised the right turn off and victoriously peddled into the inviting hearth where my friends had gathered.
It's amazing what can give you a buzz sometimes. I was just in the mood to be lost in the cold with no way of really seeing the ground ahead and nothing but my pretty pathetically weak legs to get me through. But now that I'm home trying not to shiever in my sweat soaked track clothes and feeling the ache deep in my quads, I wonder if I might have got a bit too carried away. .. what dill rides a bike in the dark with no lights on when she doesn't know where she's going!!!???
.....Naaah!
I'd do it again!!
Don't tell anyone but I felt for my mobile phone a few times just to make sure it was still in my pocket ;)
